A suprise!

Next to my home is a bush block of about 100 acres. The owners graze a couple of aged horses on it. There are also several mobs of grey kangaroos.

In summer, when the grass is dry, they jump the fence and enjoy my roses !! Going shopping a few days ago I was astonished to see an emu. fully grown, about 6 feet tall in the scrub. They tend to form small groups so I am now going to see if I can find more.

They are curious birds and are easily domesticated. A friend had one that roamed her yards (about 30 acres). One morning I was under my car, attempting running repairs, when I became aware of two large eyes and a wiiiide, strong beak just a foot away from my face. The bird picked up a large bolt in its beak and trundled off with it. I went screaming into the house. The bolt was recovered, the bird caged and I drove home.

Even more terrifying than a huntsman in the car I imagine.  Same sort of look on it's face though.  Grey, and hairy.
Where did the emu come from?  I've never seen one "in the wild" around here.  Kangaroos a plenty but not emus.
